40 Days 2019 Week #6 - Finding a deeper joy that is grounded in a life of obedience through the Spirit. - Matthew 16:13-25 (I Peter 2:4-5)
While Peter’s revelation of Jesus’ identity was correct, his ideas of what that meant for Jesus, and what it would mean for those who sought to follow Him, still needed to grow. And it’s similar in our journeys as well.
We do not arrive at the conviction that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of the Living God, through our own reason alone, but through a revelation of the Father which works through but also goes beyond our conventional thoughts. However, as we begin to understand more about what it really means to follow the Messiah, and His Way, it is sometimes the case that He is asking us to let go of our presumed, conventional ideas, and obey His call.
When we are willing to do that, even though we pay a price, we discover not only the Cross but also the resurrection, and find a deeper joy that is grounded in a life of obedience through the Spirit, becoming “living stones” which are built up into a spiritual house (I Pet. 2:4-5).
Lord, please lead me in the way that I should go. Help me to know when it’s time to let go of something in order to be obedient to you and continue to follow.
To affirm the important act of sometimes saying “no” to natural desires in order to follow Jesus, pick a meal, or a day, to forego food, expressing your desire to follow Jesus all the way to the end. Couple the fasting with a time of prayer.
