40 Days 2019 Week #3 - Grow in learning how to love by actively expressing mercy, justice and humility. - Micah 6:8

During the aftermath of the recent snowstorm in our area, a neighbor and her family decided to offer aid to others in the neighborhood who might need some help. The mom thought it was a great opportunity for her family to express kindness in a practical way. Her teenage son wasn’t quite as enthusiastic about it. Considering the options available to him, he chose to clear a path on the sidewalks of our street. With tools in hand he spent the day shoveling snow. He worked hard and did was required, but understandably, he didn’t seem to be having a whole lot of fun.Perhaps in some way we can all relate. Sometimes we do things that others would like for us to do or that seem like a good idea in the moment, but we end up grumbling or having a snarky attitude because our heart’s not in it. In his proclamation to God’s people, the prophet Micah confronts their hearts and conveys God’s expectations of them. Though they thought they were doing all the right things, in reality they were falling far short of pleasing God. They offered sacrifices and put emphasis on following the law but greed and injustice ran rampant. They were self-focused and ignored the needs of others. They’d grown blind to God’s heart of compassion and the opportunity to honor God through serving their neighbors. Like all of us, they needed to grow in learning how to love by actively expressing mercy, justice and humility.

Thank you God, for your kindness and compassion. Thank you for the mercy that you freely and generously give. Help me to grow in having a heart like yours that is open to and embracing of all people. Help me to actively express your love and care with humility, honoring you in all that I do. Amen.

This week, take some time to…

  • Reflect on ways your heart may have become numb or hardened towards the people around you. Choose something you can do to tangibly express love and compassion ~ and then do it.
  • Examine your life to discover any areas of pride or ways you might unintentionally contribute to injustice. Ask God to help you be humble and make adjustments that move you towards treating others with mercy and grace.
